Hey Everyone – meet Mary. She an amazing young woman and friend of Roots. Multiple times a week you can find Mary working at Roots and visiting with people. She always has kind words to share and a craving for chai. We sat down and asked her a few questions:

Describe yourself in two sentences.

I love being around people, I’m a people person. Adventures and new experiences inspire me.

What is the biggest compliment you can give yourself and why?

Something I was told recently was that I’m a loyal friend. Being a loyal friend is something that is just part of my being, it’s who I am. It’s naturally and normal and not always how I would describe myself but when others comment on it, it reminds me it’s true.

What’s your favorite family memory?

There are so many memories of my brothers and I playing games on end; board games or card games. Sitting at home playing game after game or the time we were at the beach and it was rainy and we just played board games for hours. Even now it’s something we enjoy.

What puts you in a good mood?

Other people, being around people. If I’m in a bad mood I just want to be around people who love me and will build me up.

What is your favorite thing about Grand Rapids?

There is so much to do! You can go to a brewery or a cider mill. You don’t want to spend money, the GRAM if having a free day. There’s so much to do in the city and just outside the city. You want to go kayak the river or hike the White Pine Trail. There is just so much to do for whatever mood you’re in or what your interests might be.

If you could only keep five possessions, what would they be and why?

  1. My phone – I’m relational and want to keep in contact with people. My phone also allows me a lot of freedoms.
  2. My dog – Murphy is the best.
  3. My Harry Potter books – they are my childhood and hold a special place in my heart.
  4. My toothbrush – can’t stand those sweaters on my teeth!!
  5. My car – I travel a lot and it allows me to serve other people too.

What is your favorite thing about Roots?

There are so many different coffee shops in Grand Rapids, but Roots is definitely different. The atmosphere that’s here is what sets it apart. When you walk in Roots no matter the weather outside it feels warm because of the windows and the people. I love that I know the people who work here. It’s great when you walk in and they know exactly what you want.
